Summary
This article applies only to the 2.x version of the 3manager Data Collector.
Sometimes during installation, certain files are not installed correctly or security software automatically removes required components. This can cause errors such as:
-
A root element is missing
-
3manager cannot connect to Windows service
- Repair failed
The only way to resolve these issues is to manually remove the corrupted installation and reinstall the Data Collector using the original Location ID.
How it works
-
The error occurs when the installation is incomplete or when required files are removed after installation.
-
Removing the faulty installation and performing a clean reinstall ensures all components are restored.
-
Re-using the original Location ID keeps your devices linked to the correct site in 3manager.
Step-by-step fix
Step 1 – Locate the installation folder
Depending on your operating system, the Data Collector folder is located in one of these paths:
-
%AllUsersProfile%\printeragent
(This works in 9 out 10 times, however if nothing is found use the below options) -
C:\Users\All Users\printeragent
-
C:\Users\All Users\Application Data\printeragent
-
C:\AppData\printeragent
Step 2 – Delete the “printeragent” folder
Completely remove the folder named printeragent.
Step 3 – Reinstall the Data Collector
-
Download and install the Data Collector (2.x version) again.
-
Log in to your 3manager account.
-
Go to Settings → Data Collectors.
-
Click the relevant Data Collector and copy its Location ID.
-
Enter the Location ID in the installer and click Update.
Things to note
-
This process does not affect your device history or settings as long as you reuse the same Location ID.
-
If the issue persists after reinstalling, check antivirus or endpoint protection logs to ensure files are not being quarantined.
-
For the latest release, consider upgrading to the .NET Core-based Data Collector, which is less prone to this error. Version number starts with 3.x.x.
